Almost nobody visits this 12,000-year-old site — because it’s off-limits to the public and guarded by the Military! Çakmaktepe is one of the earliest Neolithic sites in the Taş Tepeler region of southeastern Turkey. While other sites in the area have become better known, this location remains heavily restricted. Very few people have ever been allowed inside. In this video, I explore what archaeologists have uncovered here: around 50 circular houses carved directly into the bedrock, a large 16-metre communal building, and one of the most striking discoveries so far — a structure containing dozens of deliberately placed gazelle skulls. These findings offer rare insight into how early hunter-gatherer communities began to settle and create ritual spaces more than 12,000 years ago. Because access is so limited, this site has remained largely hidden from public view. What’s being found here could help us understand the very earliest stages of human settlement in this region. They found human bones hidden in the walls… and a haunting statue with its mouth stitched shut. At Sayburç, a 12,600-year-old Neolithic site in the Taş Tepeler region of southeastern Turkey, archaeologists have uncovered something extraordinary. Inside special communal buildings, they found clusters of human bones from secondary burials — some burned and defleshed — carefully placed in niches and walls. They also discovered a striking 2025 find: a human bust with its mouth stitched closed and ribs prominently carved, believed to symbolise the silence of death and ancestor rituals. But perhaps most fascinating of all is the world’s earliest known narrative art — a powerful 3.7-metre-long carved relief showing humans and dangerous animals in a connected story. These special buildings also contain evidence of large-scale feasting, including grinding stones and the chemical traces of what may be some of the earliest proto-beer ever made. This raises a powerful question: could ritual beer and communal feasting have helped spark the Neolithic revolution — before farming was even fully established? Today I’m taking you deep into southeastern Turkey to one of the most fascinating and overlooked places in the ancient world — Harran. This is the city where Abraham and his family lived for many years after leaving Ur of the Chaldees. It’s where his father Terah died, and most importantly, it’s where God spoke directly to Abraham and called him to leave everything behind and journey to the Promised Land. But Harran’s story goes far beyond the Bible. For thousands of years, this was a major centre of worship for the moon god Sin, home to one of the most important temples in the ancient world. We also stand on the very plains where, in 53 BC, the Roman general Crassus suffered one of Rome’s most humiliating defeats at the hands of the Parthians. Later, Harran became an important centre of learning under Islamic rule, producing scholars and becoming one of the earliest centres of higher education. However, that tolerance eventually ended. Islamic rulers destroyed the last remaining temples to the moon god and suppressed the old pagan traditions. Then, in the 13th century, the Mongols sacked Harran, destroying buildings, walls, and infrastructure, leaving the once-great city in ruins from which it never fully recovered. Today, Harran is best known for its extraordinary beehive houses — strange, conical mud-brick homes that are one of the main reasons people visit this historic place. They stand as a living link to the past. In my latest video, I head to Hastings on May Bank Holiday Monday for one of Britain’s most beautiful and ancient traditions — the Hastings Traditional Jack in the Green Festival. Also known to many as the Green Man Festival. While thousands of bikers roared into town for the famous May Day Run, I went in search of something older and deeper. The Jack in the Green is a towering figure made of fresh greenery, led through the historic Old Town by Morris dancers, Bogies, Black Sal and a sea of people dressed in green. It’s a living link to England’s past — a custom that dates back to the 17th and 18th centuries, nearly wiped out by Victorian disapproval, and brought back to life right here in Hastings in 1983. This isn’t just a quirky folk festival. It’s a powerful reminder of the heritage we’re in danger of losing. When we change the character of our towns and cities too quickly, these ancient traditions don’t just fade — they disappear. The songs stop being sung. The green man stops walking the streets. And once they’re gone, they’re gone for good. In this reflection, I stand in Lviv’s Field of Mars cemetery — the resting place of Ukraine’s bravest men and women who have given everything to defend their land and nation. I trace centuries of Ukrainian suffering and resistance: from Cossack uprisings, the partitions of Poland, Austrian and Russian rule, the Holodomor famine of the 1930s that killed millions, the UPA guerrilla war against both Nazis and Soviets in the 1940s, decades of Soviet suppression, the Maidan protests of 2013–14, the annexation of Crimea, the war in Donbas from 2014–2022, and the full-scale Russian invasion since February 24, 2022. I walk among the graves, showing the human cost: over 100,000 Ukrainian soldiers killed (some estimates far higher), tens of thousands of civilians dead, more than 15,000 civilian deaths verified by the United Nations (likely double the true number), 6 million internally displaced, another 6 million refugees scattered across Europe, half a trillion dollars in economic destruction, entire families shattered, children orphaned, communities broken. Yet these people had no choice. When the border was crossed, when the bombs fell, when the children screamed, they stood. Not for glory, not for politics — for home, for kin, for the right to wake up in a land that is theirs. While the graves multiply, distant profiteers count dividends from the war machine — selling shells, financing shells, weighing grief on spreadsheets. This is not a museum. This field is a ledger.
