The Oranjehotel, a former prison in Scheveningen, played a significant role during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in World War II. It held Dutch resistance members, political prisoners, and other dissidents. One of the most remarkable aspects of this dark chapter is the graffiti left by the prisoners on the walls. These markings, etched with courage and hope, served as a powerful morale booster for those detained within its walls. The graffiti ranged from defiant messages and poetry to names and symbols of resistance. Despite the grim conditions and the constant threat of execution, the prisoners used these inscriptions to communicate with each other and to maintain a sense of unity. In some cases, they included prayers, symbols of freedom, and expressions of hope that provided inspiration not only to themselves but to future prisoners who saw the writings.
