There's far more to Brussels than people give it credit for. A perfect destination for a European City Break!
There's far more to Brussels than people give it credit for. A perfect destination for a European City Break!

I'm back from another eye-opening trip, this time to Brussels. I arrived via Eurostar from London, expecting the usual mix of grand architecture and perhaps a bit of that "boring bureaucracy" stereotype people throw around. What I discovered instead was a city that quietly captivated me in ways I didn't anticipate – from the mesmerising glow of Grand Place under Christmas lights to world-class beers that demand slow appreciation, hearty food that warms you from the inside, and honest reflections on a place with surprising layers.

This guide comes straight from my recent adventures, captured in full in my new 75-minute documentary video embedded below. If you want the unfiltered on-the-ground story – the magic, the realities, and why Brussels still holds my heart despite its complexities – watch it now. Why Brussels? And How Easy It Is to Get There?

I often wonder why Brussels flies under the radar compared to Paris or Amsterdam. It's compact (you can walk the historic core in a day), incredibly walkable with wide boulevards and pedestrian zones, packed with layered history from medieval guildhalls to futuristic icons, and – let's be honest – home to some of the best beer (over 1,500 varieties brewed nationwide) and food in Europe (think hearty Flemish classics meets inventive modern twists). Yet it gets dismissed as "just the EU capital" — a label that overlooks its quirky soul: comic-strip murals on every corner, surreal Art Nouveau architecture, and a laid-back vibe where locals sip lambics in cosy cafés without the tourist frenzy.

My various trips to Brussels over the years have changed that view entirely. It's resilient, blending grandeur with everyday charm — a city that surprises at every turn, from glowing night lights on cobblestones to hidden breweries in industrial edges.

Getting there couldn't be simpler, no matter where you're coming from — often easier and greener than flying:

  • From the UK: Eurostar direct from London St Pancras to Brussels Midi – just 1 hour 57 minutes (fastest services) to under 2 hours, no airport stress, security queues, or liquid limits. City centre to city centre magic. I booked early for £49 return (deals dip to £39-£52 one-way if flexible — check Trainline or Eurostar app for flash sales; affiliate link). Pro tip: Book 3-6 months ahead for the cheapest fares, and grab a window seat for Channel Tunnel views - a note to newbies - you won't see anything under the English Channel!

  • From Europe: High-speed trains make it effortless — Thalys/Eurostar (now unified branding) from Paris (1h22), Amsterdam (1h50), Cologne (1h50+). Frequent departures, comfy seats, free WiFi, and scenic countryside. From further afield (e.g., Frankfurt or beyond), seamless connections via Deutsche Bahn or SNCF.

  • Flying in: Brussels Airport (BRU) has solid worldwide connections; quick 20-min train to the centre (€10-12, every 15 mins). For budget flights, Charleroi (CRL) is a Ryanair/Wizz hub — shuttle bus to Midi (~€15, 1 hour). Avoid peak times for smoother arrivals.

It's the perfect long weekend spot – I did it in a few days and left wanting more, plotting my next return for seasonal events like the epic Winter Wonders festival.

Top Sights in Brussels: Ones That Truly Captivated Me!

Brussels' centre is incredibly walkable – I covered most on foot, wondering at every turn how such grandeur sits alongside quirky everyday life. The city mixes UNESCO heritage with surreal modern touches, plus endless comic art and Art Nouveau gems. Here's what stood out (full footage in the video, including those mesmerising details):

  • Grand Place: Unesco-listed and breathtaking – golden guildhalls glowing at night, especially with Christmas markets (Plaisirs d'Hiver / Winter Wonders runs late Nov to early Jan; 2025-2026 edition featured 230+ chalets, ice rink, lights until Jan 4). I stood there mesmerised as lights reflected off cobblestones — one of Europe's most beautiful squares, with intricate gables telling stories (e.g., the swan where Marx wrote his manifesto).

  • Atomium: That futuristic 1958 icon (built for World's Fair) – climb for panoramic views over the city and Heysel park. Pair with Mini-Europe nearby for fun (mini landmarks in 1:25 scale) or the adjacent Planetarium.

  • I had low expectations of this - I was really surprised by how much fun it was!

Manneken Pis (and siblings): The cheeky statue – don't miss Jeanneke Pis (female version) or Zinneke Pis (dog) for Belgian humour. Fun fact: Manneken gets dressed in costumes 100+ times a year — check the schedule for themed outfits.

  • Église Sainte-Catherine: Peaceful 19th-century church on the old port square – its history and Black Madonna statue left me reflecting. Nearby, the Sainte-Catherine area buzzes with fresh seafood stalls and trendy bars.

  • Mont des Arts: Stunning viewpoint over the city – gardens, museums (including Magritte nearby), perfect sunset spot with panoramic views toward the old town.

  • EU Quarter: Modern contrast – walk through the institutions (European Parliament, Commission) for that "heart of Europe" feel. Free visitor centre explains it all; useful for understanding the city's global role and why Europe is now ruled by bureaucrats!

  • Comic Strip Walls & Belgian Beer World: Murals everywhere (over 50 comic frescoes city-wide — hunt them like a treasure map); interactive beer museum (Belgian Beer World in the old Bourse building), a must — history, tastings, rooftop terrace.

  • Cinquantenaire Park & Arch: Triumphal views, museums (Autoworld, Art & History) – great for a relaxed stroll or picnic under the massive arch.

I wondered how a city blends medieval grandeur with modern quirks so seamlessly – Brussels does it effortlessly, with layers waiting to be peeled back on every walk.

Best Tours in Brussels: My Recommendations

Tours added real depth – locals shared stories I’d never find alone, from hidden courtyards to beer-brewing secrets. Book via GetYourGuide (affiliate – great cancellation) or Viator for flexibility:

  • Free Walking Tour (tips-based): Historic centre intro – lively guides, hidden spots like covered passages and secret gardens.

  • Belgian Beer Tasting Tour: Essential! Sample trappists, lambics, gueuzes — I learned pairings that elevated everything. Many include 8-10 tastings and brewery visits.

  • Chocolate & Beer Combo Tour: Indulgent heaven – tastings at top chocolatiers + breweries, often with waffle-making or praline demos.

  • Art Nouveau Walking Tour: Victor Horta gems (UNESCO houses) – Brussels' architecture shines; some tours include interiors during BANAD Festival (March events open private homes).

  • Private Custom Tour: For deeper dives (e.g., EU institutions, comics trail, or off-beat Marolles flea market) – flexible via ToursByLocals.

Bonus: Check for seasonal events like Luminiscence sound/light show at the Cathedral (Dec-Jan 2026, immersive 800-year history projections).

Where to Eat in Brussels: Indulgent Classics and Hidden Spots

You won't stave in Brussels - there is something for everyone!
You won't stave in Brussels - there is something for everyone!

Brussels food is hearty, beer-infused joy – no wonder it captivated me. Highlights from my trip (watch the tastings in video), plus more spots locals swear by:

  • Moules-Frites: Mussels with fries – Chez Léon (classic touristy but reliable), Noordzee Mer du Nord (street seafood stand – fresh, affordable), or gems like In’t Spinnekopke (authentic bistro with Tubize beers) or The Lobster House (upscale, champagne options).

  • Carbonnade Flamande: Beer-braised beef stew – rich comfort at Nüetnigenough (cosy spot, great beers too) or classic brasseries.

  • Waffles: Maison Dandoy for Liege-style (caramelised, chunky sugar); street vans for Brussels-style with toppings (chocolate, fruit, whipped cream).

  • Frites: Maison Antoine on Place Jourdan – legendary, double-fried perfection (since 1948; try with samurai sauce).

  • Chocolate: Pierre Marcolini or Neuhaus – tastings essential; don't miss artisanal spots like Wittamer or Mary for pralines.

  • Beer Havens: Delirium Café (2,000+ beers – overwhelming choice!); Moeder Lambic for lambics and craft; Brussels Beer Project for innovative brews.

Vegetarian/vegan? Growing options – stoemp (mashed veg), creative spots in Ixelles or Matongé (African influences), or veggie moules alternatives at modern bistros.

Reflections: Why Brussels Still Captivates Me

As I reflect on the trip (full thoughts in video), Brussels surprised me with resilience – beauty enduring amid changes. The beer, food, lights, history... it all won me over. It's underrated for a reason: once discovered, you keep returning.
