Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume sits in the Var like a quiet claim on one of Christianity’s most stubborn legends: that Mary Magdalene’s relics rest in the crypt of the Gothic basilica that still dominates the town square. In the film below I walk the Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, the crypt, and the Provençal lanes around it — asking how much of the story is devotion, how much is medieval politics, and why the place still pulls pilgrims toward the Sainte-Baume massif beyond.

How to visit — the practicals
Where: Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume, Var, Provence — centred on the Basilique Sainte-Marie-Madeleine and its square, with the wooded Sainte-Baume ridge a short drive south. Compact historic centre; walkable once you are in town.
Getting there: Fly into Marseille Provence (MRS) or Aix/Marseille rail, then drive or bus toward Saint-Maximin (about 45–60 minutes from Aix). A pre-booked car beats negotiating the kerb with luggage — GetTransfer if you want the transfer sorted before you land.
When: Late morning for quieter naves; mid-afternoon for Provençal light on the unfinished west front. Midday coach parties thicken in summer and around the Magdalene feast (22 July). Allow two to three hours for crypt, organ, and a café pause.

Relics, legend, and unfinished stone
Saint-Maximin’s claim is medieval and theatrical: Charles II of Anjou’s late-thirteenth-century rediscovery of relics, a Dominican house raised to guard them, and a Gothic basilica that never quite closed the west front. Stand in the square long enough and the unfinished façade starts looking like honesty.
Inside, the Isnard organ is worth the visit even if you have never cared about pipes. Outside, café tables claim the edges of the pilgrimage story. The Sainte-Baume ridge beyond keeps the Magdalene tale grounded in landscape.
